Morgan was informed last week that her capstone speech, along with two other students, would have a restricted audience. The middle school aged students would not be allowed to attend her presentation.
The reasoning?? Morgan's presentation would include her feelings about her sexuality. Another student's speech would include his battle with drugs and the third's was also about homosexuality.
At first Morgan was only concerned that her brother, Corbin, who is an 8th grader would not be able to attend. (I told her of course he would because he would come with Mike and I). But then something happened...she felt discriminated against...she wondered how it was the middle school curriculum speaks about drugs, sex, etc...but she couldn't tell them what it felt like to go through middle school feeling she was different.
So with not much grandstanding but with a ton of support from her teachers, friends and fellow students she made an appointment with the administration. She simply sat down and asked what the reasoning was behind the restrictions they were putting on these presentations. She mentioned how she truly believes her presentation was directed at middle school students and that she felt they would benefit from hearing her words. The administrator went through the reasoning with Morgan. She talked about the levels of health curriculum and how the middle school students are scheduled to learn certain facts about life. They learn about reproduction in the 5th grade, about drugs in 6th and 7th...and so on.
I think maybe she heard herself explain it and thought...what are we doing?
Morgan left feeling perhaps a little defeated, however she was later pulled back out of class, so said administrator could tell her...they had rethought their decision and the restrictions on all three presentations would be lifted!
I am so proud of her! The message the adminstration seemed to be sending was that my daughter is not middle school appropriate, like something was wrong with her. She is gay not a mass murderer. Morgan took the highest road and just asked for clarification and with that opened the eyes of people who were making a terrible mistake and sending the wrong message. I applaud the administration for listening and rethinking. But I give Morgan a standing ovation for being her and believing in her power to change the world.
Sometimes it only takes one voice to ask why?
And in one afternoon Morgan went from oppressed to Freedom Fighter.
